Morphing Into Reality
When I was young, let’s say in my early twenties, I was highly impressionable. I was full of righteous indignation toward anyone and everyone in the church world who obviously didn’t know what I knew, which was more than most anyone else knew. I was determined to see a great awakening and blamed many who were 'blooming where they were planted' for the lack of their fire and intensity to see the whole world conform to my own ideas about living under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. I’m reminded of this great old quote from Mark Twain:
It is the curse of idealism that falls on an immature soul. Unfortunately, there’s nothing all your older and wiser family and friends can do about this, except wait it out, mostly with a determined silence and an internal wink and nod.
There was a song by Billy Joel that opened my eyes to this particular condition. It’s called Angry Young Man.
My favorite lyric from the song is:
I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight
I once believed in causes too
I had my pointless point of view
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right
